The Enneagram, Conflict Resolution & Willingness

Russ Hudson

6 CE Hours* / Level: All

The nine Enneagram types are not arranged randomly and can be put together meaningfully into different triadic groupings. One of the most useful groupings reveals the primary way that each type approaches conflict and difficulty and highlights ways that human beings can so easily misunderstand each other's intentions. Further, the same grouping also indicates what potential clients are looking for in choosing a therapist or coach, thus offering methods for greater effectiveness and engagement in sessions.

OBJECTIVES

  • Identify 2 of the key triadic relationships highlighted by the Enneagram.

  • Describe the relationship between the 9 Enneagram points and the work of Karen Horney.

  • State how the triadic groupings can assist in personality assessment.

  • Perform repeatable experiential exercises in 3 modalities of conflict resolution.

  • Identify at least 2 "blind spots" in your relationships with clients.

  • Delineate at least 3 practices for improving conflict resolution for your clients.

Russ Hudson is widely regarded as one of the top teachers and developers of the Enneagram system in the world today. He co-authored with Don Richard Riso five best-selling books on the subject, including  The Wisdom of the Enneagram, Personality Types, and a scientifically validated test instrument, the Riso-Hudson Enneagram Type Indicator (RHETI). He recently released an audiobook The Enneagram: Nine Gateways to Presence and holds a degree in East Asian Studies from Columbia University. Russ has appeared on Good Morning America, and The CBS Morning Show as an expert on personality type.

Turning the Unconventional into the Conventional: Some Experiments Capturing Healing Intention

William Bengston, PhD

1.5 CE Hours* / Level: All

In many experiments over the course of 40 years, Bill has gathered reliable data that demonstrate beyond reasonable doubt that "healing" can cure a variety of conditions, that dose is a factor, that healing proceeds non-linearly, that it is not fundamentally "energy" but "information," and that it is not correlated to a particular state of mind but functions more as an autonomic response to the need of the healee.

Bill's current research includes the question of whether healing can be "captured" and "reproduced" without the healer. In other words, can we store and independently deliver healing in a practical and scalable fashion? Selected research on what approaches and materials can function to store healing intention will be presented, along with current work designed to test whether these approaches are more likely to function as "alternative" or "complimentary" therapies.

OBJECTIVES

  • Summarize some experimental data related to healing.

  • Describe the evidence of how healing can be stored in both organic and inorganic materials.

  • List 2 prospects for experimental and clinical applications of the storage of healing intention.

William Bengston, PhD, is a professor of statistics and research methods at St. Joseph's College in New York, and president of the Society for Scientific Exploration, an international group of scientists who study anomalies. Bill has been researching anomalous healing for over forty years, and has numerous academic publications. Author of The Energy Cure, he has lectured widely in the U.S., Canada, and Europe.

Bill's research has produced the first successful full cures of transplanted mammary cancer and methylcholanthrene induced sarcomas in mice by energy healing techniques that he helped to develop.

Bel Guided Imagery for Deep Healing: Offering Sacred Space, Magician Energy & Ritual in the Imaginal World

Belleruth Naparstek, ACSW, BCD

1.5 CE Hours* / Level: All

Regardless of culture or geography, we humans develop a universal built-in solution for the separation anxiety that assails us from infancy. Our baby selves come up with ingenious portable substitutes for Mommy: the blankie, the binkie, the teddy, and the thumb, which in turn evolve into magical, internalized images, which are foundational to our ability to self-soothe as adults. This accounts for the extraordinary power of guided imagery. And when we add Jungian themes and archetypal figures, we get the whole human race behind our intention to heal. Learn the key building blocks of creating a healing story in the altered state, so that clients can experience this remarkable, universal intervention, with all its baked-in power.

OBJECTIVES

  • Define a sophisticated description of guided imagery and compare it to the practice of mindfulness.

  • List at least 4 different kinds of guided imagery.

  • Discuss at least 3 optimal conditions that maximize the therapeutic impact of guided imagery.

  • Name at least 3 research-demonstrated indications for using guided imagery.

Clinical social worker, author, and guided imagery pioneer Belleruth Naparstek is founding CEO of HealthJourneys.com and the voice on 63 of its award-winning recordings. Prevention Magazine reports she has quietly created an underground revolution in mainstream healthcare by persuading institutions as diverse as Kaiser Permanente, the NIH, the US Army, Johns Hopkins, Blue Shield of California, Stanford University, and Progressive Insurance to distribute her guided imagery, in many instances free of charge. She has just completed a system-wide guided imagery certificate training course for all V.A. employees and is now building custom streaming pages and clinical apps, in English and Spanish, for organizations to distribute at scale.

Respecting Indigenous Healing Traditions: From Colonizer to Ally

Grace Alvarez Sesma

The Indigenous worldview of interconnection has often led to non-Natives mistaking the generous sharing of knowledge with implied approval to take and (mis)use culture-specific customs. The willingness to accept Indigenous protocols is a critical first step to healing and transforming our communities, as is having the courage to learn to unlearn unconscious colonial behaviors that harm Native Peoples. Becoming a solid ally, you enter into a respectful relationship with the Original Peoples of Turtle Island.

OBJECTIVES

  • Describe how colonial laws, manifest destiny, and religious persecution affected, and continues to affect Native communities.

In addition to her cultural healing practice, she is a facilitator for San Diego State University's Academy for Professional Excellence School of Social Work Tribal Star program. As a cultural educator, she works with healthcare providers to promote understanding of Mexican and Indigenous culture-specific healing interventions, Indigenous protocols, and to encourage mutually respectful collaboration.

Nine Enneagram Paths for Growth & Development

Russ Hudson

1 CE Hour* /Level: All

While many people are now familiar with the Enneagram as a system of nine personality types, it is more fundamentally a dynamic, multi-faceted system that sheds light on the inner relationships between our personality and the deeper resources of our nature. The original Enneagram work was more about finding and cultivating our core capacities while becoming more aware of our potentially harmful tendencies. In this session, we will explore the nine points as possible pathways of growth and development.

OBJECTIVES

  • Differentiate the fundamental distinctions of the nine Enneagram points and their roots in three forms of human intelligence: cognitive, emotional, and kinesthetic.

  • Identify the connection between specific patterns of ego/personality and more core states of consciousness.

Russ Hudson is widely regarded as one of the top teachers and developers of the Enneagram system in the world today. He has been teaching full-time since 1991 and co-authored with Don Richard Riso five best-selling books on the subject, including The Wisdom of the Enneagram, Personality Types, and a scientifically-validated test instrument, the Riso-Hudson Enneagram Type Indicator (RHETI). Russ recently released an audiobook The Enneagram: Nine Gateways to Presence. He holds a degree in East Asian Studies from Columbia University.

Mind-Body Approaches for Healing Traumatic Attachment

Janina Fisher, PhD

1.5 CE Hours** / Level: All

The effects of traumatic attachment are the most frequent complication in the treatment of trauma. Rather than experiencing others as a haven of safety, traumatized clients are driven by powerful wishes, and fears of relationship. Even the presence of the therapist may be triggering and autonomically dysregulating. Our methods, such as EMDR, Thought Field Therapy, and Emotional Freedom Techniques, are very effective approaches to treating trauma. However, their use can be undermined by fears of: the unknown, trusting, and giving up control over the interaction.

The destabilizing effects of therapy and therapists for clients with traumatic attachment issues can be addressed by integrating somatic and mindfulness-based approaches into the treatment. Increasing the focus on mindful observation of physical and emotional responses decreases the preoccupation with the therapist and enhances treatment effectiveness.

OBJECTIVES

  • Describe the long-term effects of traumatic attachment in childhood.

  • Implement mindfulness and somatic practices of moment-to-moment self

  • observation.

  • Describe coregulation techniques that can be integrated into EMDR and energy therapy treatments.

Janina Fisher, PhD is a licensed clinical psychologist and former instructor at Harvard Medical School. An international expert on trauma trauma, she is author of Healing the Fragmented Selves of Trauma Survivors: Overcoming Self-Alienation, Transforming the Living Legacy of Trauma: a Workbook for Survivors and Therapists and The Living Legacy of Trauma Flip Chart: a Psychoeducational Tool for Clients and Therapists (in press). Janina is best known for her work on integrating neurobiologically informed interventions into traditional psychotherapy

Bliss Brain

Dawson Church, PhD

1.5 CE Hours** / Level: All

Elevated emotional, mental and spiritual states have been described by mystics for millennia. Now, modern research tools like MRIs and EEGs are allowing us to analyze the brain patterns of these adepts and map their neural activity. Science has built up a profile of their most active brain regions and found that they match those of people in peak states of "flow." These states also produce seven of the most pleasurable neurotransmitters and hormones known, from serotonin to anandamide, the "bliss molecule." This presentation reviews the neuroscience behind "Bliss Brain" and includes an experience of the practices that induce it.

OBJECTIVES

  • Name at least 2 of the neurochemicals released in the brain during peak experiences.

  • Identify the characteristic brain wave of "flow" states.

  • Describe the "lock and key" model of synaptic signal transmission.

Dawson Church, PhD, is a best-selling science writer and award-winning researcher. His book The Genie in Your Genes was the first book to demonstrate that emotions drive gene expression. Bliss Brain demonstrates that peak states rapidly remodel the brain. Dawson has conducted dozens of clinical trials, and founded the Veterans Stress Solution, which has offered free treatment to over 20,000 veterans with PTSD. Dawson shares these health and performance breakthroughs through EFT Universe, one of the largest alternative medicine sites on the web.

The Energetics (Qi) of Cultivating an Inner Residence for our Transcendental Essence Within

Roger Jahnke, OMD

1 CE Hour*

Level: All

We can help clients energetically create a profound inner sanctuary with energy cultivation methods. The ancients developed an energy-centered paradigm for human function based on the Three Treasures, body-mind-spirit. When these treasures are in coherence, the qi, the prana and function of these three treasured aspects of being operate more effectively, with the least friction (body - inflammation), the least stress (mind - distraction, worry) and the least doubt (spirit - misalignment with essence). When in coherence, we call this whole-person integrity. These ideas about qi from ancient times are the original insights for what science has now named: homeostatic capacity, vagal tone, mitochondrial fitness, interoception, neurotransmitter management and telomere sustainability.

OBJECTIVES

  • Perform simple breath practices and movements that enhance resiliency and wellbeing.

  • Describe the contemporary scientific evince supporting the effectiveness of energy-oriented practices

Roger Jahnke, OMD, is chief of staff at the Health Action Integrative Medicine Clinic in Santa Barbara California. He is director of the Institute of Integral Qigong and Tai Chi (IIQTC), a mind-body research and training institute that has trained 2000 teachers and practice leaders and has contributed to research in numerous respected medical journals. With 10 research trips to Asia's universities, hospitals, temples and sacred mountain sites, Roger has distilled the essence of qi/prana cultivation in his widely revered books The Healer Within and The Healing Promise of Qi.
